TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -Gunshots erupted in the heart of Cincinnati's downtown Thursday morning when a man opened fire in the lobby of Fifth Third Center, killing three people and wounding two others.
Police officers rushed to the scene and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was shot dead.
With four fatalities, including the gunman, this is one of the deadliest mass shootings in Cincinnati in years.
"There was definitely a lot of blood," an eyewitness said.
"A bunch of cops were coming in with guns," said Michael Richardson who was smoking in front of the building when the incident happened. "I saw a lady down. A Cincinnati police officer dragged her out of the bank. She was talking. She was bleeding. Her shirt was red."
Police said they were "investigating active shooter/officer involved shooting incident at Fifth Third Bank."
“What a sick, tragic way for this day to begin. The scourge of gun violence leaves only loss,” council man PG Sittenfeld wrote on Twitter, adding that there were fatalities. The gunman’s motive was not clear, Sittenfeld said. Police said the suspect had been "contained."
A large police presence cordoned off a portion of the city's downtown, and several ambulances could be seen at the scene.
The United States loses around 33,000 people to gun violence every year.
