TEHRAN, September 20 - Iran’s president extended his condolences on deaths in a fatal bus crash in the central province of Isfahan, calling for an inquest into the incident and for appropriate planning to avert a recurrence of such crashes which he linked to technical and administrative shortcomings.

President orders inquiry into fatal bus crash in central IranTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - In a message on Tuesday, President Hassan Rouhani said the “bitter and tragic” bus accident on a road linking the cities of Natanz and Kashan has filled the Iranian nation’s hearts with grave grief.

Extending condolences to the bereaved families of the victims, the president assigned the governor of Isfahan to try to relieve the grief of the affected families and launch a probe to ascertain the cause of the incident.

He added that recurrence of such fatal accidents in the country signifies “technical, administrative and monitoring deficiencies”, stressing that the relevant officials must find an effective remedy and avert the repetition of such tragic incidents in the country.

A passenger bus crashed in Isfahan province on Monday night, killing 19 people and injuring 27 others.

The doomed bus, travelling from capital Tehran to the southern city of Kerman, hit a fuel tanker from behind on a road near the city of Badroud and burst into flames upon impact after a rollover in the opposite lane.

On Tuesday, officials revised down the death toll from the crash to 19 from 21.

Initial reports blame the bus driver for careless driving.
