Tehran, YJC. Majlis Speaker says the country is going to suffer spiritually as well as socially for its abortion rate.

Speaking at a seminar in Tehran University of Medical Sciences on the occasion of the World Population Day, Ali Larijani said "Neither marriage and divorce rate nor that of fertility are in good shape. This shows that the desirable conditions about the country’s young population are altering.”

The Speaker of the Majlis added "As statistics show, the country’s fertility rate is 1.8 a year. But according to Majlis research, the fertility rate in 2012-2013 was 1.61, that is 1.49 for urban areas, 1.93 for rural areas, and 1.18 for the city of Tehran.”

"These problems necessitated general policies of population being composed in the Expediency Discernment Council which were issued by the Supreme Leader. The policies include 14 articles which hint to birth, migration, and death,” he pointed out.

Larijani then provided statistics indicating that lack of job security is one reason for families to prefer having no more than one child.

"One of the reasons for having one child is said to be lack of job security, saying that jobless people are 7 times more prone to choosing no more than one child,” the Majlis speaker added.

He pointed out that women with job or women as students are less inclined to think of more children.

"Families who live more in accordance to religious teachings are less inclined to having only one child; which shows that cultural factors also affect fertility,” he maintained.”
