Tehran, YJC. -- Iranian men’s national volleyball team has advanced to the next round of the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship after trouncing Serbia in its last match at the second round of the games.

On Sunday, the Iranians thrashed the Serbian squad 3-1 in a Pool E match at Atlas Arena in the central city of Lódz, the third largest city in Poland, Iran’s Press TV reports.

The Iranian team started strong and claimed the first set 27-25, but the Serbs closed the second set 22-25 to level things.

From then onwards, the Iranian volleyball players got the upper hand in the game, winning the next two sets 25-22 and 25-18.

Iran’s Amir Ghafour finished as the match’s top scorer with 30 points.

The 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship began on August 30 and will end on September 21. It is the fifth time that Iran is participating at the championship.

Also in another set of games, young Iranian volleyball players have come first in the 2014 Asian Youth Boys Volleyball Championship, having stayed unbeaten in eight straight clashes.

The title confrontation saw the national team beating Japan in straight sets, just as it had its opponents in the previous seven games against Qatar, India, Bahrain, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and China.

Mohammad Vakili’s squad thus wrested the title without conceding a single set.

The tournament was held in Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka September 5-13, 2014.
