TEHRAN, YJC – Iran’s minister of economics and Azerbaijan’s minister of economic development have agreed to establish a joint investment committee.
Ali Tayyebnia who was speaking to the press in the ministry during a visit by Azerbaijani official Mr. Şahin Mustafayev Abdulla oğlu to Tehran, said that the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomed ‘entering a new and completely different phase in its economic and cultural relations with Republic of Azerbaijan,’ believing that a trade balance of $ 500 million did not truly reflected the depth of bilateral relations and cultural and religious close ties.

Tayyebnia welcomed proposals made by Azerbaijani counterpart to boost trade, and similarly proposed that a list of goods tradable between two countries be prepared by Azerbaijan.

He highlighted the private sector capabilities in manufacturing and engineering fields such as construction of roads, dams, power plants, etc., as Iran’s investment options in northern neighbor.

Tayyebnia pointed to some of bilateral agreements in effect during past years including agreement to encourage investment, customs cooperation, and avoiding double taxation schemes. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is willing to update and improve all agreements,” he added.

The minister also agreed that a memorandum of joint cooperation is signed between the two ministries. He also welcomed a proposal by Mustafayev on tripartite cooperation of Iran, Azerbaijan, and Turkey, and hoped that necessary agreements would be made in the near future.

In response to Mustafayev’s proposal to establish a joint Iran and Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce, he said that the necessary arrangements would be made with Iran’s Chamber of Commerce.

Mustafayev emphasized upon his government’s willing to boost cooperation especially with Iran’s ministry of economics, and officially invited Tayyebnia for a visit to Baku to ‘strengthen grounds for cooperation.’

He also proposed Iran and Azerbaijan cooperate in transit of food staffs and fruits, and other agricultural products to Russian Federation, which has been sanctioned by the EU for its role in Ukraine crisis.

In a different but relevant occasion, Mexican deputy-foreign minister arrived in Tehran heading a business delegation and met with Mohammad Khazaei, Tayyebnia’s deputy.

The delegation represents ProMexico (a governmental organization to encourage foreign investments and trade in Mexico). They met in Organization for Investment, Economic and Technical Assistance of Iran building, where Khazaei pointed to unique position of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Middle East and the history of Iran’s positive relations with Mexico.
