Saturday, 16 October 2021 (YJC)_ Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman strongly dismissed the recent accusations by Azerbaijan’s President who claimed that Iran has cooperated with Armenia on organized drug trafficking.

Khatibzadeh Strongly Condemns Recent Accusations by Azerbaijan’s PresidentIn reaction to the recent the recent accusations by Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev who claimed that Iran has cooperated with Armenia on organized drug trafficking, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said he strongly criticizes it and called it as "surprising" and "fake".

“In spite of all the positive and private messages received from Baku, the government of the country made some baseless media statements that will certainly be responded in an appropriate manner,” Khatibzadeh said.

He went on to note that “The Iranian and Azeri nations enjoy strong cordial relations,” added “Iran has a leading role in fighting drug smuggling,” and said “International bodies repeatedly confirmed the role of Iran to fight drug trafficking, thousands of Iranian police officers have lost their lives and many others wounded in the campaign against narcotics over the past four decades which is only an example of the country’s struggle to battle this problem.”

Previously, Ilham Aliyev during a videotaped address at a meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Council of the Heads of State in Minsk baselessly accused Iran and claimed that for years Armenia and Iran used the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh to transport drugs to Europe.

However, in his remarks during the same meeting, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan rejected Aliyev’s accusation, and said “Law enforcement bodies of Armenia and Iran are closely and effectively cooperating against illegal drug trafficking".
