Saturday, 4 December 2021 (YJC)_ The US government has once again extended Iraq's previous exemptions from importing and purchasing electricity and gas from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The United States has renewed Iraq's exemption from buying energy from IranA State Department spokesman said today (Saturday) that the United States has given Iraq another 120 days to buy and import electricity from Iran.

Under the exemption, Iraq could continue to import electricity and gas from Iran for another four months, from early April to August, and would not be subject to Washington's harsh sanctions.

Iraq owes more than $ 6 billion in arrears on electricity imports from Iran, which has been blocked by harsh US sanctions.

Western and Iraqi sources told AFP that the United States had given the green light to Iraqi officials to release $ 2 billion in debt for gas imports to Iran through a Swiss bank account.

Iraq supplies more than a third of its energy needs through imports of electricity and gas from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
