Japanese Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a news conference on Wednesday that the Tokyo government was working with the international community and its G7 partners to impose sanctions on Russia's imports of oil and petroleum products in line with developments in Ukraine.
Asked about Japan's position on the Ukraine crisis, Matsuno was quoted as saying by the Tass news agency.
We would like to properly study the measures that are effective in cooperation with the international community and especially our close friends in Group 7.
US President Joe Biden signed an executive order yesterday banning oil, gas and energy imports from Russia. Earlier, Britain announced that it would ban the purchase of oil and gas from Russia.
However, most European countries that are dependent on Russian oil and gas have stated that they will not follow the United States in this regard.
The Japanese government also announced on Tuesday that it would impose sanctions on exports of oil refinery equipment to Russia.
